Disability Rights & Inclusive Practices

Michigan Disability Rights: January Learning Session Presented by Nick Gable

We also shared Nick Gable’s Michigan Disability Rights presentation from January 15, 2026, which provided a powerful overview of disability protections, state‑level advocacy strategies, and practical tools for navigating complex systems. The slides and resources are available in our 1in6 Support Community Forum here.

Congressional Candidates & Disability Advocacy

January has been jam‑packed with opportunities to deepen our community’s understanding of disability rights and inclusive practices. We kicked off the month by welcoming New Jersey Congressional Candidates Cammie Croft, Brendan Gill, and Tom Malinowski to the Montclair Friday Group. Members had the chance to share their needs and concerns directly with the candidates, while also hearing about each candidate’s record on disability issues and their plans to support the disability community in the House of Representatives.

Understanding School Support & Special Education Services

Our learning continued with an informative session led by Dr. Shivoyne Trim, Head of Pupil Services, and Tameka Stafford, Supervisor of Special Education in Montclair. They offered clarity on district practices, supports, and the evolving landscape of special education services. Their insights helped families better understand how to advocate within school systems and collaborate effectively with educators.

How Disability Lawyers Support Families

To round out this education‑focused January, 1in6 Support published an article post demystifying the role of disability lawyers and how attorneys help families secure accommodations, challenge discrimination, and navigate inaccessible or confusing systems. It also highlights an important fact many families don’t know in many disability‑related cases, legal support is free because fees are paid by the school district or agency when violations are found.

Curated Comedy For A Cause

We’re thrilled to announce that 1in6 Support has been selected as the featured non‑profit for the upcoming Curated Comedy for a Cause event on February 26th at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair. This community‑driven night of laughter brings together incredible local comedians and generous neighbors, all rallying to support our mission of empowering families and advocating for disability rights.

Being highlighted at this event is a meaningful opportunity for us to share our work, connect with new supporters, and celebrate the strength of our community in a fun, uplifting setting. Tickets are expected to go quickly, so grab yours soon before they sell out and join us for an evening that promises both joy and impact.
